The Pagan holidays are some of the oldest holidays known. Many out-date the common practices for holidays that are popular today. Pagans may be wondering how they can celebrate one of the most popular Pagan holidays there is – Yule.
Celebrating Yule With the Yule Tree
One of the best ways to celebrate the yule season is to decorate a Yule tree. This tradition seems to be the predated version of the Christmas tree. Many families choose to celebrate both Yule and Christmas, especially if they have a family of mixed practitioners. This can make an interesting tree, but it can be done.
The Yule tree can be decorated with lights and natural items as well as traditional Christmas bulbs and stars. They may also choose to add stars and Pagan symbols to the tree as well as these items. A good idea is to work with the children in the family to make natural decorations to add to the Christmas or Yule tree.
Yule Celebrations – The Yule Dinner
Another tradition that can be done is to have a dinner in honor of the goddess and god on Yule. The meal can be cooked by the whole family.
As it is cooked, the food can be blessed in honor of the goddess and god. Some traditions also ask for a place to be set for the goddess and god, although this is not something that is necessary unless the family would like to do it.
Giving Presents and Yule Rituals
Presents can also be given on Yule for the family. Some families choose to open some of there presents on Yule and Christmas. Depending on the family, they may choose to do this or to give to others in the world.
Yule is also a time for honoring the winter solstice. This can be done at an altar in the home and with the whole family if they choose too. Some families choose to exclude younger children from their rituals. The altar should be decorated with items that represent the season. Candles should be used on the altar as well to honor the goddess and god and any other deities that the practitioner may decide to honor at the same time.
Yule can be a time of great understanding and kindness if the practitioners want it to be. Anyone that is looking at starting their own Yule celebration, should consider not only the traditions that have been celebrated over the years as well as ones they may decide to start on their own.
